About this winery

As a child and young teenager the fields and lanes of the family estate, Casale del Giglio, were nothing more to Antonio Santarelli than a place where he could spend carefree weekends; but all changed when he joined his father Dino in the family business. By then, he knew instinctively that their unconventional land in the Agro Pontino valley, some 50 kms south of Rome, offered a unique opportunity to attempt something no-one had ever attempted.

Product notes

Cold maceration for two days at 10°C. Slow spontaneous fermentation with a submerged cap, at about 16-24°C for 15-18 days with periodic racking to aerate the yeasts. An additional 12-15 days of maceration on the skins will follow to extract more tannins. Depending on the vintage, 15-20% will be aged in cherry wood barrels while the rest is stored in stainless steel tanks.

Production notes

100% fully ripe Tempranillo that has slightly dried on the vine. Cold maceration for two days at 10°C, to extract as much aroma as possible from the skins. This first step is followed by a very slow spontaneous fermentation with a submerged cap, at about 16-24°C for 15-18 days with periodic de-stemming to aerate the yeasts. Following the fermentation, an additional 12-15 days of maceration on the skins will follow to extract more tannins. Depending on the vintage, 15-20% will be aged in cherry wood barrels while the rest is stored in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting notes

You read correctly, it is really a Tempranillo wine... in Italian soil! While some of the estate's parcels provide the ideal conditions for its cultivation, the result in the glass speaks for itself: a deep color with powerful aromas of black cherry, mocha coffee and licorice. The mouth is fleshy and endowed with pulpy tannins. A beautiful beast to discover!
