About this winery

The name De Wetshof has been synonymous with the production of fine wines in South Africa since the 1970’s. As the first registered wine estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, De Wetshof has become known internationally as South Africa’s eminent Chardonnay House due to the pioneering role it played in introducing this noble Burgundian grape to the country. Product notes

Made from the Chardonnay grape variety. Clay and limestone soils. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is followed by aging for several months on the fine lees before the wine is finally drawn off. It eveals a bright, golden yellow color. It shows wonderfully expressive aromas of kumquat, orange, lemongrass and pink grapefruit, rounded off by brittle, oak and roasted hazelnut.

Neal Martin, August 2023 (Vintage 2023)

The 2023 Chardonnay Limestone Hill undergoes between 80 and 120 days on the fine lees with weekly stirring. The aromatics offer squeezed lime and red apple scent that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with nectarine and peach skin notes, slightly oily texture, and a finish that I would swear was Viognier (it is definitely 100% Chardonnay). Good lenght, this is a fine and thoroughly enjoyable wine.
